We here at the PackerBackerBlog are obviously thrilled to have Ahman Green back. Not only do we get to have one of our favorite players back - but we get to pull out our old #30 jerseys (Kuhn give up the number) out of the closet.
However, this move confirms our sinking feeling that the Packers management and coaches may not have a clue. And no, I'm not talking about Favre.
Some evidence:
The Packers signed Rodgers to a long term deal last year , but they've never attempted to get some serious protection for their large investment. Instead of free agents, the Packers attempt to rely on the draft - 2008 and 2009 have shown that this is not a great strategy. (The Bears used free agency, signing Orlando Pace, and it hasn't helped Cutler, either.)
In early September, 53 man cuts ended the Packers journey for safety Anthony Smith and running backs Tyrell Sutton and Kregg Lumpkin. The Packers surprised many by keeping 3 fullbacks (one of just a handful of teams to do so.)
Then Bigby goes down for 3 games and the Packers were forced to sign free agent safety Matt Giordano when they could have been safe with Smith.
And now Deshawn Wynn goes down with a serious injury and the Packers are forced to sign Ahman Green who hasn't played a snap all season. Meanwhile, people are saying nice things about Tyrell Sutton in Carolina (yes, he hasn't played a snap).
This shortsidedness and the sloppy play is leading us to believe that maybe McCarthy and Thompson are not the team who will return us to the Super Bowl.
